Use of categories

Categories in news and events are primarily used to sort news/event lists so that only news/events with one or more specific categories are displayed. See the guide Create list views, information on how to filter a list using categories.

You can enter text in the field Find Subject to search for a specific category.

Sorting in news/event lists

You can use categories to sort news/events. This allows you to, for example, display news lists that only show news items with specific categories. For instance, if you want to display all research news on your research page, and you have tagged all research news with the category 'Research', you can set up a plugin that exclusively shows news with the 'Research' category, filtering out other news items in the list that cover different topics.

You can also choose to display a news list with all news items in a news folder except those with a specific category. For example, if you have many news items about PhD defenses that clutter your news overview, you can set up a plugin that excludes news with the 'PhD' category from the main news list, and instead create a separate news plugin to display all PhD defenses.

If you need help setting up a news plugin, please contact your local TYPO3-support, for assistance.

Combining Categories

By combining the different categories available, you can specify the type of news or event being referenced.

For instance, when creating a PhD seminar, you might think you should use the 'PhD defense' category. However, this is not how categories are intended to be used. Instead, you should choose the 'PhD' and 'Seminar' categories. There is no option to use a combined category that includes both. The reason for this is that it simplifies sorting news items, as you can sort by 'PhD', 'Seminar', or a combination of both categories.

What categories can I choose from

The categories you can choose from depend on your access level (editor role and website). By default, you will always be able to choose categories under areas of expertise, target audiences, and other more specific categories.

If you have suggestions for changes to the categories, please feel free to email typo3@au.dk. If the changes are deemed relevant, they will be implemented for all users of the news module.
